My New Album "Sex Lives of The Paralyzed"

It's been awhile for me to post anything here but I got this new thing out there; "Sex Lives of the Paralyzed" an album I've been workin' on for about a year on and off. It's most moody acoustic ballad material, it's a lot more sparse and non-confrontational then "The Pervert" my last effort under my own name. You can check out a few tracks on the myspace page if you're curious. I also tried out some video editing software for the first time (real shitty video editing software as it turns out) and made this video for one of the songs off of Sex Lives "Flower Printed Linen"

It's made with some shots I took from this years Lantern Festival on my friend's tiny digital camera. The Lantern Festival was really neat, I regret never having gone before. Anyway, the album is available at Fred's records and hopefully will be listed on their website soon. If you run into me somewhere I can probably sell it to you for cheap.

Reality producer to tackle first film, comicbook

Thom Beers, the producer behind the hit reality skeins "Ice Road Truckers," "Deadliest Catch" and "Monster Garage," will tackle zombie bikers in his first film and comicbook project.
Beers' shingle, Original Prods., and comicbook publisher Devil's Due are moving forward with "Chopper Zombie," about a motorcycle builder who refuses to sell his formula for a new superfuel to a dangerous corporation. When a team of thugs drowns him in his own toxic creation, he rises from the dead with a score to settle.

Todd Livingston ("The Black Forest," "The Wicked West") will pen the graphic novel, with Scott Keating ("Death and the Man Who Could Not Die," "Elk's Run") handling the art.

Original developed the project with Livingston and Keating. Beers and Original prexy Philip Segal will produce the pic, which they hope to put into production sometime next year.
Devil's Due will launch the book at next week's Comic-Con in San Diego alongside a custom zombie chopper assembled by "Monster Garage's" creators. Title hits store shelves July 30.
"Chopper Zombie" becomes the latest book for Devil's Due to go into development as a feature, following "Drafted," "Lost Squad," "Serpo" and "Hack/Slash."

Two for one

My friend loaned me her fancy wood engraving tools and I just made this little seahorse! It's only about 3.5"x2". Probably the actual size of some type of seahorse.
Wood engravings are done on the end of the block of wood, where the grain is superfine. There's a better explanation here if you're interested. The tools are superfine too, and tricky to use. But I think I'd like to try some more. And on some better quality paper than computer paper.

I've been making comics a lot lately, and the soundtrack to my comic-making has been a radio show out of B.C. called Inkstuds where they interview indie comics artists. Chris Ware, Seth, Chester Brown, Joe Matt, etc. etc. etc., plus a few people who don't make comics but are awesome like Ralph Steadman and Genesis P. Orridge. Check it out!

3D (sort of)

I've started bringing my notebook doodads into 3D. I haven't gotten any interesting movement out of them yet, but I'm starting to like how the lines and planes are looking.

Here's an earlier attempt. I was using the program's "toon shader" to do some of the outline work, but have since started doing all of it myself. Computers have shitty taste, so you can't leave any of the important stuff to them. They'll just slap a uniform stroke around the contour and call it a day. Lazy fuckers.

Halloween Decorations

This year I got it in my head to build a window display. It's pretty simple, a landscape made from cardboard along with a few set-pieces made from carved and painted styrofoam. The big 'attraction' is a floating ghostly skull which hovers between the archway in the front. It's done using 'Peppers ghost', an old stagecraft illusion which is used heavily by David Hoffas. I projected a simple animation on a sheet in the background using a fresnel lens and a tv. Here's a terrible picture of it at night. You can sort of see the skull there.

Grant Writing Tips

Barb Hunt had a grant writing talk on the weekend and my friend Ya-Ling went and today she gave me the notes. There's some good stuff in there, so I scanned them in and here they are. There are also notes about organizing group shows... On that note, the deadline for Canada Council Grants is December 1st. Apparantly, you have to have three juried shows.

Two new paintings

I finished up two paintings before I finished up the albums posted down below this post. It takes me a while to document stuff sometimes. The top one is made from a hunk of Masonite I was using for a cutting board, and I just used the gouges as guides for the paint. The bottom painting is mostly pigment experiments with kool-aid, fabric dye and jello type stuff. it's got some fun textures if you see it in person.

Anatomy books

A couple years ago, while struggling to finish a figurative painting for the Stephenville Theater Festival, I realized that my knowledge of human anatomy was laughable. Art school had taught me nothing on the subject (I assume because it’s considered academic or fascist or something), and my digital animation training had covered only the basics.

I decided I would teach myself, and quickly became obsessed with the subject. Two years later, and I am still obsessed. I have become an insufferable anatomy nerd.

In case anyone else is interested, here’s a bunch of reviews of the anatomy and figure drawing books I own.

Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm

This is probably the best one for beginners. It’s a bit facile and dated, but covers a lot of ground and has tons of genuinely useful tricks. Pick this one up if you’re trying to emulate 1950’s illustration (lots of square jawed men and big-hipped, high-heeled women).

Dynamic Anatomy and Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth

I’m really ambivalent about Hogarth. There is a clarity and consistency in his diagrams that you won’t find elsewhere, but there’s also something truly repellent about the way he draws the figure. His are not “real people,” but rather enormous, gay, Nazi automatons.

He also seems to have a bizarre fixation with muscle, excluding bone, skin and fat from the discussion altogether.

If you’re going to pick up a Hogarth anatomy book, I would suggest getting both Dynamic Anatomy and Dynamic Figure Drawing. The former contains detailed breakdowns of muscle groups and the latter some nice schematizations (ways of simplifying things into larger geometric forms).

Hogarth’s best book, in my opinion, is not an anatomy book, but one entitled Dynamic Light and Shade.

Constructive Anatomy and Bridgman’s Life Drawing by George B. Bridgman

It took me a long time to warm up to Bridgman, but the more I study his books, the more I realize that he may be the best of the bunch.

Bridgman’s approach is brutal, and at first, rather off-putting. His figures are broken down into rough simple masses, their angles and curves exaggerated grotesquely. But unlike Hogarth, who distorts to suit some bizarre German ideal, Bridgman does so to clarify form. The more you study, the more you begin to see the logic and truth in his diagrams.

A lot of bigshot artists studied under Bridgman: Will Eisner, Norman Rockwell, and my favorite guilty pleasure, Frank Frazetta.

Figure Drawing for all it’s Worth and Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis

Fellow TADA member Paul Tucker turned me on to Loomis about a year ago. He’s fantastic, but for some bizarre reason, all of his books are out of print. Luckily, you can get them on the internet as PDF files. He’s a nice mid-ground between the practical but facile Hamm and the in-depth but somewhat opaque Bridgman.

Loomis’ way of constructing heads is the best and easiest I’ve come across. I also really like his way of doing “figurettes,” though I find his schematized hips awkward.

I highly recommend that you download all of his books.

Atlas of Anatomy by nobody

Picked this up cheap at Chapters. Not really intended for artists, but the first chapter has some really vivid illustrations of bones and muscles that I’ve found helpful.

Drawing the Human Body by Giovanni Civardi

This is the only anatomy book I own that might end up at a yard sale. The text is endless reams of medical jargon. The pictures are lifeless renderings from the model. No schematization, no diagrams showing the underlying bone and muscle. Crappy book.

Artist’s Guide to Anatomy by Gottfried Bammes

Bammes published a book on anatomy that’s touted as being the best in existence. However, it’s in German and it’s really expensive, so I had to settle for the slimmer Artist’s Guide to Anatomy.

This book is a collection of studies done by his students with just a couple drawings by the author. The text is not terribly illuminating, but many of the pictures are stunning. Bammes teaches his students to break down and schematize the figure, but in a much finer way than Bridgman.

Bammes also has a very nice book on animal anatomy.

Facial Expression by Gary Faigan

Faigan’s drawings are hideous. But he really, really knows his shit. This is a brilliant and exhaustive study of human facial expression. Visuals are a mixture of drawings from the model, medical diagrams, classical paintings and photos both staged and candid. Very highly recommended.

It's been a long while since I posted anything up here, it feels kinda strange. Anyway, I just finished work on this big bloody project here "The Pervert". It's a pretty ridiculous album I've been working on for the last ten months or so. My friend Justin did up this nifty flashcard promo thing for the album that the picture should link you to and I've updated the website www.patrickcanning.ca with a better more informative music section and different frontpage and I just frigged around with the myspace page there yesterday. Anyway, I mean to get back into some visual art activities this summer so the next news posted by me will hopefully be something picture oriented. cheers.

Blind Contour #51 (Hey)

I've already editioned this one, a simple lino-cut. It's actually a dark burgandy colour.

This is a proof of a woodcut/screenprint. The flat orange is the screenprinted part. I made a few changes to the block before I printed some on blue and green backgrounds on Saturday. I think I may print some of the block on white paper in black and/or grey ink also. I kind of just made this one up as I went along, which was weird. Seems like a lot of text to slog through, but if you're up to the task, there's probably several opportunities there for you. Every now and then I'm hankering for a deadline, aren't you?

And here's another one: Artshow. I just Googled art deadlines.

ALSO: I just found this Canadian portrait competition, with a $3000 prize (although the website looks a bit shabby): http://www.kingstonprize.ca/ Anyone heard of this before? The deadline is May 1st, and portraits may be either paintings or drawings, and must be made from life within the 24 months preceding the closing date. From the site:

Jury members are Eliza Griffiths, artist (Montreal); Bill Kirby, Executive Director of the Centre for Canadian Contemporary Art (Toronto); and Richard Rhodes, editor of Canadian Art magazine (Toronto).

From the entries received, the jury will select thirty portraits for the exhibition, which will be held in October 2007 at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque, Ontario. The prizewinners will be announced at a Gala Preview, and the People’s Choice will be announced near the closing of the exhibition.

Upside: You only have to send a CD, not the actual artwork. Downside: $25 entry fee.

Hoo boy, I just saw this awesome documentary on Google Video from 1983 called Style Wars. It's about the graffiti scene in New York, particularly in and on the public trains. Chiropractic Tips for Shoveling Snow:
Winter is here and snow removal is a major problem for many people. The following tips are offered for shoveling driveways and walks:

DOs
-Stretch your back, neck, arms and legs with a brief warm-up.
-Use a shovel appropriate in length and weight to your height and strength.
-Bend from the knees while lifting and keep the spine as straight as possible.
-Push the snow when it is practical, as opposed to lifting and throwing it.
-Deposit the snow close to where you are shoveling, to avoid heaving it across a wide area.

DO NOTs
-Shovel at too rapid a pace. Work at a pace fitting to your age and strength.
-Lift snow with your back. Bending and twisting the spine are common causes of disc and ligament damage. Do use your arms and body to deposit snow in one smooth motion.
-Shovel with your feet planted firmly in one spot. Allow your legs and thighs to help your upper body and arms deposit the snow to the side.
-Lift large amounts of snow in one scoop of the shovel. To avoid back strain, shovel light to moderate amounts of snow per load.
-Overwork yourself. If you are huffing and puffing, stop immediately and rest.

Indyish is looking for illustrators to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the relay art project The Assembly:

Sounds like a huge collaborative project - this is from the website:
The Assembly: 7 teams of writers authored 7 scripts. 7 directors are using those scrips to produce 7 movies. 7 bands are composing and performing original film scores.

To compliment this month-long insanity, and with help from Celtx, Indyish is producing a project ‘zine that will contain the 7 scripts. That’s where you come in.

Illustrators interested in participating:Your task will be to develop an image to compliment one script. You’ll be given a text at random and have one week to draw or design something inspired by the document. Your imagery can decorate the script pages, or add a single 8 1/5 by 11 page to the document. Submissions of drawings, photos, collage are welcome but must be submitted in 300 dpi tiff or jpg format. Please submit both a colour and black/white version of your piece.
Your work must be finished by Sunday February 25, 2007. The zines will be assembled and made available in basic Black and White in time for the screening and party, March 10 2007 at Friendship Cove.
This book will also be published in full colour via Lulu.com. License: CC Attribution as usual.

Oh my it's been a while, but here's what I've been up to lately in the art department. I'm still having fun with those blind contours, so I've taken them to the next level!
Above, a lino-cut I did at the Art Marathon last week (about 9"x12"), and, below, a painting I've been tinkering with for a few weeks (about 2.5'x2.5'). I'm happy with both and plan to do some more in both media.
And I've gotta get cracking on some more comic panel paintings too; I was drawn for a Rogue show in early November (pics to follow).
